Dr. Houshmand is a clinical and counselling psychologist whose practice is focused on the treatment of depression, anxiety and perfectionism. She has extensive experience in student mental health and has published widely in the field of multicultural psychology. Prior to joining Mind Balance, Dr. Houshmand provided psychological services at a large medical practice in Hong Kong, the University of Toronto, Western University, and the Concurrent Disorders Service at Parkwood Hospital in London, ON. Dr. Houshmand’s theoretical approach is grounded in a collaborative, multicultural framework addressing concerns such as adjustment to a new country, culture or academic/work setting; perinatal depression and anxiety; and, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
Dr. Houshmand draws upon evidence-based theories including cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, and dialectical behavioural therapy. In addition, she welcomes the integration of creative forms of expression and mindfulness in her practice. Dr. Houshmand has provided workshops on addressing microaggressions in therapy, anti-oppressive mental health care, as well as on perinatal mood issues for expectant parents. She received her Ph.D. from McGill University; her doctoral research on racial microaggressions has been published in several widely cited articles.
